Biomass Power Plant

A major and very important part of our facility is our in-house biomass power plant. Since June 2020, we have been using it to generate our own electricity—more than we need for our sawmill.

From the initial idea through implementation to the start of construction

In the fall of 2018, the idea of independence was born, and it was decided that the major goal of becoming more independent had come a good deal closer to reality through the generation of our own electricity. Shortly thereafter, planning for the power plant began, a process that took a full year. In the fall of 2019, the groundbreaking ceremony for the foundation took place.

Construction Period, Commissioning

In May 2020, after just eight months, we were already able to conduct our first test and put our power plant into operation. The official inauguration followed in June 2020. It took another six months to reach full-load operation, so by December 2020, we were able to celebrate a complete success.

Difficulties

We, too, were affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused our construction phase to be extended by a quarter of a year. All in all, looking back, we can still say that the construction phase went very well and was well-planned, and we are all the more delighted today to have such a structure on our company grounds.

Since our biomass power plant began operations, we have been able to supply our company with electricity generated on-site.

To generate electricity, we can use all the biomass waste from the forest and our timber production.

Wood chips mixed with a little sawdust, bark, and forest wood chips make the perfect blend for our incinerator.

In our main boiler, water and oil are heated during the combustion process. We use the hot water to supply our company and to operate the heating system. The hot oil generates electricity in a closed-loop system using what is known as an ORC turbine.
