What is a sawmill?
In a sawmill, round timber - i.e. the raw tree trunks from forestry - is converted into usable wood using a saw. Among other things, boards, beams and squared timber are produced there. Essentially, the process consists of precisely cutting round timber with machines such as frame saws, band saws or circular saws and shaping it into a specific form. The resulting timber products are suitable for various construction projects and are often made to measure. Sawmill work also produces valuable by-products such as bark, sawdust and wood chips, which can either be used for further processing or as a source of energy.
A basic distinction is made between stationary and mobile sawmills. A mobile sawmill is particularly flexible, as contract cutting can take place directly on the customer's premises, for example in the timber yard. Stationary sawmills, on the other hand, are permanently installed in the company and only have one location. When comparing sawmills, stationary sawmills impress above all with their modern technology and more efficient processing of large quantities of timber. Mobile variants, on the other hand, impress with their high flexibility.
Planed goods defined
Planed products are wood products, such as profiled timber, that have been processed by planing. Basically, planing is a fundamental process in woodworking where wood surfaces are smoothened and brought to precise dimensions. The way a planer works is quite simple: the workpiece is guided along a flat surface while a rotating cutting blade - the plane - removes wood chips to create a flat and smooth or profiled surface. Depending on requirements, different plane irons can be used to carve differently profiled surfaces and patterns into the wood.
There are different types of planers, including hand planers and electric planers. Hand planers are manually guided over the wood and require a certain amount of skill and strength from the operator to achieve consistent results. Electric planers, on the other hand, use a motor to drive the planing blade, which speeds up the process considerably.
