What is a sawmill?

At a sawmill, roundwood from sustainably managed forests is processed into high-quality Wood products such as boards, square-edged lumber, and beams. These wood products, also known as sawn lumber, are used, for example, in construction, furniture manufacturing, and industry. Modern sawmills rely on precise machinery, sustainable processes, and state-of-the-art technologies. In addition to the main product—sawn timber—valuable byproducts such as bark mulch and wood chips are also produced, which are either further processed or used for energy generation.

Once powered by water, today's sawmills generally operate using electric motors and rely on resource-efficient methods.

With 75 dedicated employees—a balanced mix of experienced professionals and young talent—we have always been committed to the highest quality and responsibility toward nature. Since the founding of Hirschbach in Sulzbach-Laufen, we have been passionately committed to sustainable production that protects the environment while meeting modern technical standards. We are particularly proud of our biomass power plant, which has been in operation since June 2020 and supplies our sawmill and surrounding households with 100 % of green electricity. In this way, we are doing our part for the energy transition.

Purchasing and Processing of Roundwood

As an established sawmill with many decades of experience, we are your reliable partner in the timber market. We produce wood sustainably, which means we source our roundwood primarily from the region and ensure responsible forest management. Our roundwood is cut into lumber at the sawmill according to customer specifications and, if necessary, dried as well as planed in our own planing mill.
