This will be a varied and challenging role for you, because as a Apprentice Woodworking Mechanic, Specializing in the Sawmill Industry You ensure that wood—a natural and living raw material—is transformed into something new. The wood you work with is used, for example, as a building material for houses, in interior design, or in the furniture industry.

Responsibilities
- Working at the sawmill is all about teamwork. It’s not just a place to work—it’s also a place where you can make friends. —Working with wood also means working with other materials, state-of-the-art machinery, and cutting-edge technologies. As a woodworking mechanic, you’ll sharpen saw blades, for example, or maintain them.
- As a woodworking technician specializing in the sawmill industry, you’ll also glue boards together. This process produces glued-laminated timber beams for modern timber engineering (e.g., a 7-story high-rise made of wood or massive, self-supporting structures).
- Woodworking technicians specializing in the sawmill industry manufacture all types of modern wood-based panels. As the use of solid wood in the furniture industry declines, you ensure a perfect foundation for the materials.
- Modern sawmill equipment must be maintained and serviced. This, too, falls within the scope of a woodworking mechanic's responsibilities.
Job Description
- Operating Saws, Milling Machines, and Other Equipment
- Processing wood as a raw material into wood components such as boards and beams (sawn lumber)
- Transporting lumber with large vehicles such as wheel loaders and forklifts
- Care and maintenance of high-quality equipment, modern machinery, and various tools
Main Responsibilities
- Grading of Roundwood by Species and Quality
- Operating and Monitoring Modern Machines and Systems
- Grading of Lumber by Species and Quality
- Manufacturing of various sawn timber products
- Sharpening Saws, Knives, and Milling Cutters
- Further Processing of Cut Goods
- Lumber Drying
- Picking of finished products and warehousing
Academic Prerequisites / Requirements
- Good grades on the secondary school or junior high school graduation exam
- The Joy of Wood, a Natural Product
- Interest in Technology
- Craftsmanship
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Working Independently
Training Program Overview
- Dual Training at a Company and a Vocational School
- (Block classes twice a year, 5–6 weeks each, in Göppingen)
- Woodworking mechanic exams are administered as a two-part final exam: Part 1 takes place after approximately 1.5 years (usually in the spring), and Part 2 at the end of the 3-year apprenticeship (summer or winter).
